Incredible Opportunity Program

The Incredible Opportunity Program (IOP) is our beginner ensemble, a group instruction class, for students ages 8-13 who do not already play a string instrument, but would like to learn to play the violin. Students will learn basic violin skills such as how to hold the violin and bow, making a solid sound with good technique and ensemble skills by playing with other students.

General Program Description: Classes are held Sunday afternoons, 3-4PM, beginning in Fall, and run through the beginning of Spring. IOP students participate in the three major concerts of the SYSO season, as well as other opportunities

Total program cost is $280 plus a $15 materials fee (book and shoulder pad). A rental violin will be provided if needed at no additional cost.  Financial aid is available to qualified students.  For more information send us an thesyso@gmail.com.

Suburban Youth Symphony Orchestra

SYSO is the group for musicians that have achieved some level of technical independence. Students in SYSO are able to play their instrument well enough to adapt what they do to the goals of the group. As well as performing string orchestra works, the members of SYSO do a six week course of chamber music. Each is assigned a  chamber music ensemble and each ensemble is assigned a musician from the Illinois Philharmonic Orchestra as coach. They get six weeks of coaching, then perform their pieces at the Hearts and Roses concert in historic and beautiful St. Peter’s Church in Frankfort. SYSO musicians get opportunities to attend Illinois Philharmonic concerts. We believe contact between our musicians and the professionals of the Illinois Philharmonic creates the kind of relationships that make musicians grow.

General Program Description: Rehearsals are held Sunday afternoons, 3-5:30PM, beginning in September, and run through the beginning of May.  SYSO students participate in the three major concerts of the season, as well as other opportunities

Total program cost is $420 for the year, or $235 per semester.  Financial aid is available to qualified students.  Please email thesyso@gmail.com if you wish to request an application for financial aid.

Suburban Youth Symphony Junior Orchestra

The junior orchestra is the bridge from IOP level work to membership in SYSO. In the junior orchestra you continue to expand the skills you’ve learned in IOP as a beginner, and learn to use those skills as a member of an ensemble. Students will spend time in rehearsal dedicated to technique and theory. Our goal is Junior orchestra students will learn that the more skill and ability you have to share, the more you enjoy sharing. Students in SYSJO will have the same opportunities as students in SYSO.
